NEW YORK (TURKISH JOURNAL) – Pia Bozyel – United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned against climate inaction, underlining that it will lead to loss of life.
A report published by the UN body drew attention to the possible drastic effects of insufficient progress with respect to climate goals.
Pointing out that current policies will lead to global warming of at least 2.8 degrees celsius above pre-industrial levels over the course of this century, the report warned that this is above the Paris Agreement target of 1.5 degrees celsius.
The report criticized the lack of progress made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by countries, stating that “Insufficient progress towards climate goals is slowing down the global fight against poverty, hunger and deadly diseases.”
Making reference to 12,000 reported disasters from weather, climate and water extremes during the years of 1970 and 2021, the report put forward that, while especially effecting developing countries, the total of economic losses due to these disasters totaled 4.3 trillion dollars.
The report praised the UN’s “Early Warnings for All” initiative, while noting that a majority of countries still do not have early warning systems in service.
