New York, Nishat Mirza-

• Acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair shared a powerful lesson on authenticity and breaking barriers at Muslim House, reflecting on a life-changing conversation with her son, Zohran Mamdani.

• Designer Michael Kors highlighted the transformative impact of school meal programs through his work with the World Food Programme, emphasizing education, gender equality, and opportunity.

• NASA astronaut Victor Glover discussed how viewing Earth from space can inspire a collective movement to protect the planet through science, emotion, and culture.

The Tribeca Film Festival returned to New York City this June, bringing together filmmakers, artists, storytellers, and visionaries from around the world. Beyond the screenings and red carpets, the festival created meaningful opportunities for audiences to hear the personal stories behind some of today’s most influential voices in film, culture, philanthropy, and science.

One of the most memorable conversations took place at Muslim House, a prominent cultural hub and networking space for Muslim storytellers, filmmakers, and allies in the entertainment industry. Renowned filmmaker Mira Nair spoke candidly about breaking barriers and pursuing the work that only you can create. She reflected on a defining moment in her career when she was offered the opportunity to direct a Harry Potter film while simultaneously developing The Namesake. Although directing Harry Potter was an extraordinary opportunity, Nair recalled a conversation with her son, Zohran Mamdani, who was 14 years old at the time and an avid fan of the Harry Potter books. He advised his mother that many talented directors could make Harry Potter, but only she could make The Namesake. The lesson stayed with her throughout her career: true success comes from embracing your unique voice and creating something that only you can bring to the world. Both Nair and her son would later demonstrate that principle through their own groundbreaking achievements.

Another standout event was Tribeca X, where fashion designer Michael Kors discussed his long-standing humanitarian work as a Goodwill Ambassador for the World Food Programme. Speaking about the importance of giving back, Kors remarked, “How can I not give back? So much has come my way.” Through his partnership with the World Food Programme, he has helped provide more than 35 million school meals to children around the world. He highlighted how a contribution of just five dollars can provide a month of school meals for a child. In many communities, particularly in countries such as Sri Lanka and Nicaragua, school meal programs have a profound impact on girls’ education. Families that may otherwise keep daughters at home are more likely to send them to school when meals are provided, creating opportunities for education, empowerment, and long-term social progress. Kors also emphasized the critical role women play in food preparation and community development in many regions.

The festival also featured the red-carpet premiere of the documentary Odyssey, where NASA astronaut Victor Glover offered a compelling perspective on humanity’s relationship with Earth. When asked whether seeing Earth from space creates a stronger desire to protect the planet and address climate change, Glover reflected on the famous “Earthrise” photograph captured by astronaut William Anders during Apollo 8. He explained how that iconic image transformed the way people viewed Earth and helped inspire the environmental movement that ultimately led to the first Earth Day. Glover noted that meaningful change requires more than science alone. By combining scientific understanding with emotion and cultural perspectives, societies can build powerful movements dedicated to protecting the planet for future generations.

As Tribeca 2025 demonstrated, storytelling extends far beyond cinema. Whether through film, philanthropy, or space exploration, the festival showcased voices that challenge conventional thinking, inspire action, and remind us that meaningful change often begins with a powerful story.
