By Janet Ekstract, NEW YORK- The race to elect a new United Nations Secretary-General is heating up with the entry of a new candidate on Friday, October 30 when the Turkish government formally nominated Feridun Sinirlioglu as a candidate for the position which places him as the eighth candidate from the current seven candidates in the running. The nomination was conveyed by Turkiye’s U.N. envoy Ahmet Yildiz on behalf of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, coming amid the Security Council’s seventh informal “straw poll” – resulting in no consensus on a frontrunner. The 70-year-old Sinirlioglu has over 40 years of experience in diplomacy, having served as Turkiye’s foreign minister in 2015 and was Turkiye’s Permanent Representative to the U.N. from 2016-2023. In 2023, he led an independent U.N. assessment on Afghanistan. Political analysts point out that the Turkish government is positioning Sinirlioglu as a compromise candidate who can bridge divides.

Meanwhile, observers and experts highlight the fact that the search to replace U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres whose term ends on December 31, 2026 has been defined by two strong informal pressures: a push for the first-ever female U.N. chief and adhering to regional rotation that favors Latin America and the Caribbean which creates diplomatic hurdles for Sinirlioglu’s candidacy. To secure the nomination, Sinilioglu or any other candidate has to go through a strict multi-step voting system outlined in the U.N. Charter. The three main steps include: Security Council Recommendation: This means that a candidate must have at least nine votes from the 15-member Security Council. They also must avoid a veto from any of the five permanent members (U.S., China, Russia, France and the UK). Geopolitical Obstacles: Sinirlioglu is expected to face major and quick pushback within the Security Council from Greece (now an elected member) and potentially from Israel, a close U.S. ally. General Assembly Vote: After the Security Council reaches a consensus on one individual, that single name is forwarded to the 193-member General Assembly for a final, formal appointment.

Vision Statement of Feridun H. Sinirlioğlu, Candidate for Secretary-General of the United Nations:
“Principles That Will Define My Term”:

1- Strict fidelity to the purposes and principles of the UNCharter.

2- Independence and impartiality in serving all Member States.

3- Transparency and accountability throughout the UN system.

4- Strong partnerships with regional organizations.

5- A steadfast commitment to inclusion, ensuring that all voices, especially those traditionally underrepresented, help shape global solutions.
