Brant Schwartz – GENEVA, Aug. 27, 2026 — Hundreds of people remain missing in Nepal and China after devastating flash floods swept through Himalayan communities on Wednesday, destroying homes, roads and bridges and cutting off entire villages.In Nepal, the worst-hit districts include Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, where at least 17,000 children have been affected. The floods have also disrupted water, telecommunications and healthcare services.
The UN has released an initial $2 million in emergency funding, while the World Health Organization has sent medicines, medical supplies and tents to support affected communities.
In China, authorities say around 560 people remain missing, with significant damage reported in the Tibet Autonomous Region.
A possible glacier collapse in the Himalayas has been cited as a potential cause of the sudden flooding and mudslides. Rescue and relief operations are continuing as humanitarian agencies work to reach isolated communities.
