Turkiye Ready To Host Putin: Erdoğan Seeks To Further Diplomatic Ties

By Janet Ekstract, ISTANBUL- Turkish President Erdogan told journalists on his return to Turkiye from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan that he had lengthy discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin there. Both leaders were in Ashgabat for events commemorating the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality and the U.N-designated “International Year of Peace and Trust.” Talks focused on Ukraine and peace efforts, Erdogan said and he reiterated that Turkiye’s stance on the war is quite clear – having openly urged for a cessation to the hostilities and for diplomacy to be the cornerstone of peace initiatives. The Turkish leader said he also expressed Turkiye’s willingness to host Putin for a visit and stressed how crucial it is to meet as soon as possible. Erdogan said Putin responded positively and said he would plan to visit in the near future, adding that Turkish-Russian relations were established on a deep-rooted history, strong diplomatic foundations and mutual trust and that bilateral ties are not formed by short-term or tactical considerations.

Meanwhile, Erdogan did warn about turning the Black Sea into a war zone, emphasizing that such a development would be detrimental to both Russia and Ukraine. He also underscored how crucial it is to ensure freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Black Sea since all parties depend on stability in the region. He said that all parties depend on stability in the Black Sea region and that Turkiye is encouraging the U.S. in its continuing peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine.  Erdogan said that Turkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is in close and constant contact with his U.S. counterparts while the Turkish government is also engaging in dialogue with other relevant parties. The Turkish leader said he expects to open discussions on peace plans with Trump very soon and underscored his government’s willingness to help advance a peace agreement.
