UNDP: Rising Polarization and Inequality Threaten Global Development Gains

NEW YORK (TURKISH JOURNAL) – PIA BOZYEL – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has warned that the world is facing a deepening crisis in human development, driven by escalating political polarization, rising inequality, and a failure of global cooperation.

In its latest Human Development Report titled “Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarized World”, UNDP noted that despite technological and scientific advances, human development progress has stalled for the first time in decades. The report highlights how entrenched geopolitical rivalries and uneven development are fueling mistrust, weakening solidarity, and limiting collective action on shared challenges such as climate change and artificial intelligence governance.

UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner stated that “the world is at a crossroads” and called for a renewed global commitment to multilateral cooperation and inclusive policymaking to address the complex crises of the 21st century.

The report also sheds light on how artificial intelligence and digital technologies, while offering opportunities, risk exacerbating existing divides unless governed responsibly.

According to the Human Development Index (HDI) rankings, global disparities persist, with many countries still lagging far behind in health, education, and income levels.

UNDP emphasized the need for bold reforms and trust-building measures to “break the gridlock” and reimagine development pathways that prioritize equity, resilience, and sustainability.
