NEW YORK (TURKISH JOURNAL) – Pia Bozyel – United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres, regarding the developments in Israel and Occupied Palestinian Territories said, “This most recent violence does not come in a vacuum. The reality is that it grows out of a long-standing conflict, with a 56-year long occupation and no political end in sight.”
Guterres spoke to reporters at UN headquarters in New York.
Condemning Hamas’ attack on Israeli towns and villages, Guterres stated that although he recognizes Palestinian’s legitimate grievances, “nothing can justify these acts of terror”.
Israel airstrikes are pounding Gaza
Guterres also said that while he recognizes “Israel’s legitimate security concerns”, he is deeply alarmed by “Israeli airstrikes that have pounded Gaza” and the increasing number of civilian loss of life.
Calling on Israel to carry out all its military operation in accordance with international humanitarian law, Guterres emphasized that civilians and civil infrastructure should be protected at all times.
Guterres urged that relief and entry of essential supplies into Gaza must be facilitated.
