BİRLEŞMİŞ MİLLETLER (TURKISH JOURNAL) – Pia Bozyel- The United Nations warned that the “world is nowhere near “ to achieving the sustainable development goals agreed upon by the organization by the year 2030.
The 3-day event, ”High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development” (HLPF) in UN headquarters, New York, came to an end today.
Serving as a platform to monitor and review the implementation of the SDGs, adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, the HLPF focused on “Sustainable and Resilient Recovery from the Covid-19 Pandemic” this year.
The main focus of the HLPF was to seek solutions and strategies to “build back better” in the post-pandemic era.
- “We still have 7 years”
Following the discussions, the main organizer of the forum, Lachezera Stoeva, President of the Economic and Social Council said, “We are halfway to 2030 and yet nowhere near to achieving the SDGs. The bad news is we’ve lost seven years. The good news is, we still have seven years and victory is within our reach.”
The forum reached the consensus that in order to achieve the SDGs, “a collective effort” is essential with the participation of governments, civil society, businesses, and individuals.
