By Janet Ekstract, NEW YORK – The 2025 G7 Summit is celebrating its 50th anniversary with Canada at the helm of the 2025 G7 Presidency. The G7 Leaders’ Summit 2025 will meet in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada from June 15-17 and focus on global issues like international peace and security, economic stability and the digital transition. As Canada has stated: “This year will be an opportunity for Canada to demonstrate our leadership and advance meaningful dialogue, collective action and innovative solutions for the benefit of all peoples. As the G7 opened, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney announced three core priorities for the G7 Summit. Those include protecting our communities and the world, building energy security and accelerating a digital transition, securing the partnerships of the future. Regarding global security, this would mean strengthening peace and security, countering foreign interference and transnational crime as well as boosting joint responses to wildfires. With energy security, that would mean building up critical mineral supply chains and using artificial intelligence and quantum to forge new economic growth. An essential challenge is obtaining massive private investment to build stronger infrastructure, create higher-paying jobs and open dynamic markets where businesses can compete and succeed.
Other top priorities include peace for Ukraine and other areas of conflict worldwide, a contemporary agenda that engages partners beyond the G7 and recognizing that long-term security and prosperity depend on building coalitions with reliable partners and common values. This G7 Summit marks the seventh time Canada has held the Presidency of the G7 and the 2025 G7 Summit takes place on the traditional territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy Nations of the Kainai, Piikani and Siksika and the Stoney Nakoda Nations comprised of the Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney First Nations and the Tsuut’ina First Nation. Also acknowledged on this territory are the Otipemisiwak Metis People and Government and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta. As The Rt. Hon. Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada said: “Canada has what the world wants and the values to which others aspire. The G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis is a moment for Canada to work with reliable partners to meet challenges with unity, purpose and force. Canada is ready to lead.”
