Turkish Journal – Zehranur Ertek – The first Muslim International Film Festival, initiated by filmmaker Sajid Varda, starts today in London. The festival aims to support the works of international Muslim filmmakers and restore the artistic identity of Muslims.

In his previous interview with The National, Sajid Varda said, “The media loves to use Islam and Muslim as part of the headline, because again, it is just the way of stoking up fear, dividing communities, so this is really about how we reclaim our identity, which really has been taken away from us.”

At the festival, only films whose production was completed by January 1, 2022, are accepted. The aim is to present a cultural exchange experience through the power of films by showcasing works from countries such as Türkiye, Iran, England, Sudan, and Morocco.

The festival features eight feature films, two sets of short films, as well as panels and networking opportunities. Notable films include ‘Goodbye Julia,’ set at the beginning of South Sudan’s separation in 2011, and ‘Inshallah A Boy,’ which depicts Nawal’s struggle for independence for herself and her daughter following the death of her husband.

The festival, which will run until June 2, invites all enthusiasts to this cultural event at the Odeon Luxe West End in Leicester Square.
