By Janet Ekstract ISTANBUL-On Tuesday, Turkish Parliament approved Sweden’s long-awaited NATO bid after a vote of 287 to 55 with four abstentions in the 600-member parliament. The next step is the formality of the publishing of the approval in the official announcements. Once it’s published, Sweden’s membership takes effect.
Currently, the only obstacle to Sweden’s full accession into NATO is Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban who is in no rush to ratify Sweden’s NATO bid as he announced months ago. The bloc was considering other options to circumvent just such a circumstance but so far, nothing has been announced yet.
