NEW YORK – In a statement from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s spokesperson Matthew Miller, Blinken announced on Monday that the U.S. is among 32 coastal Atlantic countries adopting the Declaration on Atlantic Cooperation and launching the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation. He explained that the new forum is multilateral and will gather coastal Atlantic countries across Africa, Europe, North America, South America and the Caribbean. The nations will participate in collective problem solving and maintain a set of “shared principles” for Atlantic cooperation. The new initiative was launched at the Ministerial for Atlantic Cooperation on the sidelines of the 78thUnited Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Also adopted was a Plan of Action outlining the grouping’s first phase of work.

The partnership is the first Atlantic-based grouping to include both the North and South Atlantic while focusing on a broad range of issues on shared priorities. The purpose of The Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation is to open a new chapter in regional cooperation, primarily one of sustainable development, science and technology. There are two main goals: to solidify the Atlantic states community on a framework to engage more effectively and to declare a set of guiding principles for Atlantic cooperation that’s outlined in the Declaration on Atlantic Cooperation.
