NEW YORK (TURKISH JOURNAL) – Pia Bozyel – As all eyes turn to New York for the 78th United Nations (UN) General Assembly, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are poised to be at the epicenter of the General Debate.

UN members will meet at the SDG Summit that will take place on 18-19 September to see where they are regarding the 17 SDGs towards the target year of 2030.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, warned that members are at midpoint and real action is necessary to achieve the SDGs.

Citing his main priority as achieving a “breakthrough” at the SDG Summit, Guterres called on world leaders to commit.

Following decades of progress in achieving SDGs, for the first time there is a reverse trend.

Guterres warned that, “Today, only 15 percent of the targets are on track, with many going into reverse.”

Adding that the SDGs are essential to provide a better life to people, Guterres said, “I urge you to keep going.”
