TURKISH JOURNAL – Pia BOZYEL – The United Nations (UN) Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bruno Lemarquis, has called for the urgent reopening of the airport in Goma.

A written statement was issued by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) regarding the reopening of the airport in Goma.

The statement emphasized that the airport is critical for the evacuation of the injured, the delivery of medical supplies, and the arrival of humanitarian aid teams.

Based on information provided by OCHA field teams, the statement noted that thousands of civilians are still on the move in and around Goma.

The statement highlighted the difficulty of verifying data, reporting that a significant number of displaced persons along Kanyaruncinya Road have moved toward Rutshuru, while others have headed toward Minova.

Drawing attention to the fact that hundreds of thousands of people remain displaced in North Kivu, the statement pointed out that many are still residing in displacement camps, particularly along the Goma-Sake axis.

The statement also indicated that OCHA and its partners have been visiting displacement sites outside Goma over the past few days to assess conditions, with these efforts still ongoing.
