TURKISH JOURNAL – Pia Bozyel – The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in El Fasher, North Darfur, Sudan, and strongly condemned the attacks in the region.

The UNSC issued a written statement on the matter.

The statement condemned the attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher, especially the assault on the Saudi Teaching Maternal Hospital on January 24, which resulted in the deaths of over 70 people and left dozens wounded.

The statement referred to UNSC resolutions, emphasizing the need for the RSF to end its siege of El Fasher immediately and called for an end to the fighting and de-escalation in the area.

It was stated that the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure must be ensured, and attention was drawn to the humanitarian crisis in El Fasher and the Zamzam IDP camp. The continuing conflict’s devastating impact on civilians was emphasized.

The statement underlined the obligation of all parties to protect civilians under international humanitarian and human rights law and stressed the importance of member states refraining from actions that fuel the conflict and supporting efforts for peace.

Additionally, the statement reminded all parties to comply with the arms embargo provisions outlined in UNSC resolutions 1556 (2004) and 2750 (2024).
