NEW YORK (TURKISH JOURNAL) – Pia Bozyel – UNICEF, warning that time is running out, called for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access in Gaza.

The New York based UN organ for children published a written statement regarding the recent developments in Gaza.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell warned that “The situation is catastrophic, with unrelenting bombing and a massive increase in the displacement of children and families. There are no safe places.”

Underlining that “there are rules of war” and children in Gaza require lifesaving assistance, Russell emphasized that “every minute counts”.

Taking note of the fact that more than 420 thousand people are already displaced within Gaza, Russell said, “A child is a child. Children everywhere must be protected at all times and must never come under attack.”

Russell called on the Israeli army to rescind its order asking Palestinians in north of Gaza to relocate to the south.

Drawing attention to the fact that the Israeli army’s order refers to 1.1 million Palestinians in Gaza, Russell warned that half of this population consists of children.
