Human Rights chief Volker Turk warned that the war in Gaza has the potential for “spillover in neighboring countries.” His comments came as his was giving his global update to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHCR). He said it’s crucial that everything be done to avoid a wider conflict and that due to the humanitarian crisis that anything could happen. As Turk told the Council: “I am deeply concerned that in this powder keg, any spark could lead to a much broader conflagration. This would have implications for every country in the Middle East and many beyond it.” Turk also referenced military escalation in southern Lebanon between Israel, Hezbollah and other armed groups which he said is extremely concerning. In addition, the human rights chief said: “Incidents in which civilians, including children, paramedics and journalists, have been killed in attacks must be fully investigated.”
