US President Joe Biden has given Ukraine the authority to deploy US-supplied long-range missiles to hit targets on Russian territory, marking a significant shift in American policy. The decision, confirmed to CBS News by a U.S. official, follows months of requests by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to lift restrictions on the use of Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS).

Known for their 300 km (186 mile) range and high-speed capabilities that make them difficult to stop, the ATACMS could give Ukraine a strategic advantage. Although Ukraine has already tested missiles on the territory of eastern Russia, this decision expands their potential use.

Zelensky responded cryptically to the news on Sunday, saying, “Such things are not explained, the missiles speak for themselves.”

A Potential Turning Point
The move drew stern warnings from Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously described such actions as NATO’s “direct participation” in the war. While he has yet to comment on the latest developments, senior Kremlin officials have described it as a dangerous escalation.

Washington framed its decision as a defensive measure supporting Ukraine’s efforts in the Russian border region of Kursk, where Ukrainian forces launched an offensive in August. The Biden administration suggests that this move will strengthen Ukraine’s bargaining position in future peace negotiations.

“This is very important for Ukraine,” said Serhiy Kuzan, head of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation. “This is not a game changer, but it will level the playing field.”

Broader Implications
The decision is expected to pave the way for other Western allies, such as Britain and France, to allow Ukraine to use its long-range Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia. Neither country has officially responded to Biden’s statement.

Ukraine estimates that 11,000 North Korean troops are stationed in Kursk and estimates that a major Russian and North Korean offensive aimed at dislodging Ukrainian forces is expected soon.

Escalation on Multiple Fronts
Ukraine continues to face heavy attacks by Russian forces, including the attack, which President Zelensky described as the largest coordinated missile and drone strike in recent months. Over the weekend, at least 18 people were killed in missile strikes in Sumy and other regions, while Russian officials reported shooting down 26 Ukrainian airliners in Bryansk.

Political Context
President Biden’s decision comes as he approaches the end of his presidency amid concerns over the policies of his likely successor, Donald Trump. Trump has criticized U.S. aid to Ukraine and hinted at an end to the war, but the details remain unclear.

According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the United States has become the largest supplier of weapons to Ukraine, providing more than $ 55 billion in military assistance since the beginning of the war.

While Ukraine supports the intensifying wars, Biden’s decision points to the continued determination of the United States, even though it has implications for broader geopolitical risks and NATO’s stance in the ongoing conflict.
