Turkish Journal – Şevval Erdağ – The United Nations General Assembly accepted the resolution on combating Islamophobia on the International Day for Combatting Islamophobia, March 15th.
The voting in the General Assembly chamber resulted in 115 ‘yes’ votes, 0 ‘no’ votes, and 44 ‘abstentions’. Among the 44 countries abstaining, included France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Greece, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, Ukraine, and India.
The accepted resolution condemned all forms of discrimination, violence, and advocacy of religious hatred across all forms of media, as well as religious intolerance, stereotyping, and hostilities towards Muslims, including sacred texts and sites.
Türkiye, which was part of the group that prepared the resolution and acted as a co-sponsor, called for support for the inclusive text of the resolution in the General Assembly before the vote, while voting against the proposed amendments to the resolution.
In 2022, a resolution presented by Türkiye and Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) declared March 15th as the ‘International Day for Combatting Islamophobia’ in the UN General Assembly.
For the past two years, March 15th has been celebrated as the International Day for Combatting Islamophobia. (AA)
