Reconsideration of Palestine’s Full UN Membership Rights

Mutlaka Oku

Turkish Journal – Şevval Erdağ – Riyad Mansour, the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations, has submitted a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, requesting the Security Council to reconsider Palestine’s membership application during April 2024.

Mansour referenced Palestine’s original application for membership in the United Nations, documented in S/2011/592 dated 23 September 2011, stating, “I have the honor to request that renewed consideration be given to this application by the Security Council during April 2024.”

He expressed gratitude for Guterres’ prompt transmission of the request to the Security Council.

In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly granted Palestine non-member observer state status. This allowed Palestine to participate in discussions and organizations within the UN, but voting rights were not granted.

For Palestine to achieve full membership in the United Nations, approval from the UN Security Council is necessary, followed by a vote in the UN General Assembly.(AA)
