By Janet Ekstract NEW YORK – Leave it to the romantic and creative Italian gelaterias in Genoa, Italy to honor women as their inspiration for three new gelato flavors. As the President of Confartigianato Genoa, Felice Negri said the inspiration came from a desire “to highlight the uniqueness of each woman, a sweet opportunity to reflect once again on equal opportunities.” Meanwhile, Italy’s mainstream newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that to coincide with Women’s Day, the initiative was officially presented by Genoa’s Councilor for Equal Opportunities Francesca Corso and her counterpart in the Liguria region, Simona Ferro. Corso commented: “The three flavors of ice cream dedicated to International Women’s Day are a laudable initiative that shines a spotlight on gender equality and the need to build a truly inclusive and women-friendly society together.”
The initiative is supported by municipal and regional authorities in Genoa, located in Italy’s northwestern region while also supported by the Confartigianato Group – an organization that serves small business owners and artisans. The three eclectic, delectable flavors include Val d’Oro e Ibisco – consisting of multi citrus fruits with an infusion of red tea and hibiscus. Women is a concoction of blueberry and sparkling wine sorbet with passion fruit ripple, grated lemon peel. The third flavor known as Primavera in rosa is a pink semifreddo, colored with berry puree and garnished with sponge cake. As Ferro added: “Even a simple gesture like eating an ice cream become an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of 8 March.”
