NEW YORK (TURKISHJOURNAL) Following the disappearance of the “Titan” tourist submarine on its way to see the Titanic, search and rescue teams on Thursday morning found the Titan’s outer parts near the site of the Titanic wreckage. OceanGate, the company managing the mission, said five people on board had died.
“This is a very sad time for the entire explorer community and for each of the family members of those lost at sea,” the company wrote.
Rear Admiral John Mauger of the US Coast Guard said the wreckage found on the ocean floor about 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic was “consistent with the catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber” on the diver. Coast Guard officials said it was too early to say whether Titan had exploded.
The US Coast Guard said the families of the five people on board had been given the bad news.
The US Coast Guard said Thursday that search and rescue teams had discovered a “debris field” near Titanic. After assessing the wreckage, the Coast Guard determined that the debris contained parts of Titan, including a landing frame and a tailgate from the ship. The wreckage was discovered after waiting for the submarine’s oxygen supply to run out.
“A debris field was discovered within the search area by an ROV near Titanic,” the Coast Guard wrote on Twitter.
